Starlink officially launches satellite internet services in Bangladesh

Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by US-based aerospace company SpaceX, has officially launched operations in Bangladesh, marking a major step forward in the country’s digital transformation efforts.

The announcement was made by Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to the Chief Adviser of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, at a press conference held Friday evening at a city hotel.

A high-profile delegation from Starlink, including Lauren Dreyer, vice-president of Business Operations, and Richard Griffiths, director of International Strategy and Government Relations, attended the event.

According to Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Starlink’s entry into Bangladesh has been carried out under the direct initiative and supervision of Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. “This is not merely a technological upgrade—it’s a milestone in enhancing our national digital infrastructure,” he said.

Lauren Dreyer praised the Bangladeshi government’s bold and forward-looking approach to technology and connectivity. “While many nations deliberate, Bangladesh acted,” she said, applauding the government for swiftly moving from dialogue to deployment. The final regulatory approvals were granted in May 2025, and the first users came online within weeks.

Dreyer emphasized that the arrival of Starlink is about more than just internet access. “We are launching opportunities—remote learning, telemedicine, digital entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic growth,” she said. She also acknowledged the role of local partners such as Felicity IDC and Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited in enabling the successful rollout.

“Connectivity should be a right, not a privilege,” Dreyer added. “With this launch, we are helping build a future where no one in Bangladesh is left behind.”

The formal launch follows approximately three months of trial operations. Starlink has been awarded a 10-year Satellite Operator Licence and Radio Communication Operators Licence by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

Installation and Pricing

To get connected, customers must purchase a setup kit costing Tk 42,000. This includes a satellite dish, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and other essential hardware.

Two service plans are now available: Starlink Residential that involves Tk 6,000 monthly fees for unlimited internet at speeds up to 300 Mbps, while Starlink Lite will cost Tk 4,200 per month for reliable, uninterrupted service at a more affordable speed.

Starlink’s launch is expected to significantly benefit underserved and remote regions, improving access to online services in education, healthcare, and commerce.
