Cabinet Committee formed to review electricity tariffs

The government has moved to adjust wholesale and retail electricity prices in response to mounting pressure on the country’s energy and power sectors caused by global volatility over Iran-Israel war.

To this end, a high-level cabinet committee has been established.

According to a notification issued on April 9, 2026, the committee will be convened by the Finance Minister and will include the Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, as well as the Commerce Minister.

Secretaries from the Finance Division, Power Division, and Energy and Mineral Resources Division will also serve as members.

The notification states that rising fuel supply costs and increased power generation expenses have made tariff adjustments a pressing issue.

The committee has been tasked with assessing the need to revise electricity prices at both wholesale and retail levels. Following its review, it will submit clear recommendations for consideration at a cabinet meeting.

The committee has the authority to co-opt additional members if necessary. Meetings will be held as required, with administrative support provided by the Power Division.

The decision has taken immediate effect, the notification added.

According to the Power Division, cumulative losses in the electricity sector stand at Tk 55,000 crore.
