The government of Bangladesh has extended registration for its motorcycle “fuel pass” scheme to a further 19 districts, as part of a phased nationwide rollout aimed at tightening oversight of fuel sales.
The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources announced the expansion in a Facebook post on Monday, stating that registration will gradually be introduced across all districts.
The latest phase covers Gazipur, Narayanganj, Cumilla, Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Bogura, Pabna, Sirajganj, Bagerhat, Chuadanga, Jashore, Barguna, Bhola, Jhalakathi, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Dinajpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram.
The ministry said registration had begun in these areas from Monday as part of efforts to implement the fuel pass system nationwide. Users have also been encouraged to join the scheme’s official Facebook group to share feedback, complaints and suggestions.
The government introduced the digital system to bring greater discipline to fuel sales, strengthen monitoring and improve transparency in distribution.
Earlier, on 18 April, the ministry said it was expanding a pilot of the “Fuel Pass BD” mobile app beyond Dhaka, bringing registered motorcycles in several districts and metropolitan areas under the scheme. It also extended the pilot to 18 additional petrol stations in the capital.
According to the scheme’s website, the system uses QR code-based identification and controlled distribution to ensure more orderly and transparent fuel sales. However, it remains in a pilot phase.
The app-based system was first launched on a trial basis on 9 April at two filling stations in Tejgaon and Asad Gate in Dhaka, initially limited to motorcycle users.
The move follows recent disruption at petrol stations, including long queues, supply shortages and allegations of artificial scarcity, after the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East. Authorities say the digital system is intended to improve control, monitoring and discipline in fuel distribution.
