A sharp drop in gas supply has been reported in Bangladesh after a technical fault forced the shutdown of a key floating LNG terminal, disrupting deliveries to the national grid.
Output fell by 400 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) after a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) at Moheshkhali—operated by US-based Excelerate Energy—went offline early in the morning due to a pipeline leak, according to a senior official.
The facility suspended gas transmission at around 6:00am local time. Repairs were completed by midday, and supply has since resumed. However, officials warn that it may take time before pressure across the network fully recovers.
Distribution companies say consumers are likely to experience low gas pressure in areas served by Titas Gas, including Gajaria, Meghnaghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj and parts of southern Dhaka.
Titas Gas authorities have issued an apology to customers for the disruption, describing it as temporary.
Officials at Petrobangla said the system is expected to stabilise as operations return to normal, though full supply may not be restored immediately. “It requires at least 48 hours to return to normal after an FSRU shutdown. We expect full supply by Friday,” one official said.
Meanwhile, the nation’s second FSRU, Summit LNG Terminal, is currently operating above its guaranteed regasification capacity, official confirmed.
