Power Division has directed all electricity distribution utilities and companies to investigate widespread complaints of unusually high electricity bills issued to consumers in June and take necessary corrective measures.
The directive follows reports that many consumers received significantly higher electricity bills this month compared with previous months, according to a statement issued on Monday by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
The ministry said the Power Division had instructed all distribution companies to closely examine the complaints and take appropriate action to minimise consumer hardship.
“In recent weeks, information received from various sources indicates that consumers have been billed unusually high amounts for electricity in June 2026 compared with other months,” the statement said.
The government has also urged customers who believe they have been overcharged to lodge complaints directly with their respective electricity distribution companies or through the Power Division’s designated helplines.
Consumers can contact the Power Division’s central customer service hotline on 16999. They may also seek assistance through the dedicated helplines of individual power distribution companies, including Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on 16200, Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) on 16899, Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) on 16116, Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) on 16120, Northern Electricity Supply Company (NESCO) on 16603, and West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCL) on 16117.
The Power Division did not specify the cause of the unusually high bills but said the matter would be monitored closely and appropriate measures would be taken following the investigation.
