Bangladesh has ordered shops, markets and shopping centres across the country to close by 8pm, in a new government measure aimed at reducing electricity consumption.
According to a circular issued by the Power Division on 12 August, commercial establishments will be permitted to remain open from 11am to 8pm. The new timetable replaces an earlier arrangement under which shops and markets could operate from 9am until 9pm.
The government has also directed that illuminated billboards be switched off by 7pm, while other forms of decorative and display lighting are also to be turned off as part of the energy-saving measures.
The restrictions will apply to fairs, trade fairs and cultural events being held across Bangladesh, the circular said.
Some essential establishments will continue to operate under separate arrangements. These include food outlets, hospitals and pharmacies, according to the notice.
The government said the measures were necessary as part of efforts to manage electricity demand and ensure more efficient use of power.
The circular was issued by the Power Division of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources and circulated to city corporations, local administrations and other relevant authorities for implementation.
The latest restrictions come as Bangladesh continues to take measures to manage energy use and electricity demand.
