The Interim Government of Bangladesh has announced the formation of an expert committee to assess and enhance the current rural electrification framework, following near-complete electricity network expansion in rural areas.
This initiative aims to boost the efficiency and sustainability of the country’s rural electrification efforts.
The committee will be chaired by Prof. Syed Farhat Anwar, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, with distinguished members such as Prof. A.K. Enamul Haque from the Asian Center for Development, Prof. Md. Ziaur Rahman Khan from BUET, Prof. Mohammad Mahbub Rahman from BRAC University, and Prof. Khaled Mahmood from IBA, Dhaka University. Administrative support will be provided by Kausar Habib.
According to a press release signed by Mohammad Mozammel Haque, Joint Secretary of the Power Division, the committee is tasked with reviewing foundational documents and organizational structures of the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) and Rural Electrification Associations (REAs). They will also conduct interviews with stakeholders at various levels to gather insights.
The committee aims to propose a competitive, technically proficient, and financially sustainable structure for the rural electrification sector upon completing its review.
