Bangladesh signs tripartite deal with Nepal and India for hydropower

Bangladesh has signed a tripartite deal with Nepal and India on Thursday to exchange 40MW (megawatts) of Katmandu’s hydropower using Indian corridor.   

Under the deal, Bangladesh will import 40MW of hydropower from Nepal between June and November every year using Indian transmission line.

The Bangladesh and Nepal power secretary-level Joint Steering Committee (JSC) finalised the decision to sign this power trade agreement on Wednesday.

The meeting, co-chaired by Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation of Nepal Suresh Acharya, and Senior Secretary of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Mohammad Habibur Rahman, reached several key decisions, including the export of electricity to Bangladesh.

The meeting also discussed advancing the process of developing the 683 MW, Sunkoshi-3 Reservoir Hydropower Project in collaboration with Nepal, India, and Bangladesh.

According to the Ministry of power, energy and mineral resources division sources, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), and Indian nodle agency NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) have signed the agreement on behalf of their organizations.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Nepalese minister for energy, water resources and irrigation Dipak Khadka, water resources secretary of Bangladesh Nazmul Ahsan and senior officials concern attended at the signing function in Nepal.
