The Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers Association (BMCA) has hailed the inclusion of citizens’ right to round-the-clock internet access in Section 2(b) of the Cyber Security Ordinance 2024 as a major victory for consumers in Bangladesh.
In a press statement, BMCA President Mohiuddin Ahmed stated, “We have been advocating for years to recognize internet access as a fundamental right. Through seminars, meetings, and proposals to the Constitution Reform Commission, we emphasized the importance of constitutional recognition for internet access and data security.”
This inclusion reflects the interim government’s commitment, marking a new triumph for consumers in the New Bangladesh initiative, he continued.
The BMCA expressed gratitude to the Chief Advisor, the ICT Advisor, and policymakers of the interim government for their support and urged the inclusion of this right in the Constitution.
Ahmed stressed, “Equal access to uninterrupted, high-speed internet must be established as a universal right to empower marginalized communities.”
The organization also thanked the media and supporters for their role in amplifying this demand and highlighting its significance.
