Environment Ministry warns against fireworks during New Year’s Eve

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has issued a stern warning against the use of fireworks and firecrackers during New Year’s Eve celebrations, citing significant public health risks and legal consequences.

It also indicated at severe impacts on public health and biodiversity.

Citing past incidents, including the tragic death of a heart disease-stricken child frightened by loud noises, the ministry highlighted the dangers of noise pollution, which can lead to hearing loss, anxiety, high blood pressure, heart disease, and mental health issues.

Addressing the public, a senior official stated, “We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly and avoid activities that harm health and the environment. Fireworks and firecrackers not only worsen air and noise pollution but also violate national regulations.”

The ministry highlighted that unauthorized fireworks and firecrackers violate Rule 7 of the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules, 2006, and are punishable under Rule 18.

First-time offenders may face up to one month of imprisonment, a fine of up to 5,000 BDT, or both. Repeat violations can lead to penalties of up to six months of imprisonment or fines up to 10,000 BDT.

In support of this directive, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed a ban on all kinds of fireworks and sky lanterns in the capital during the festive season. This measure aims to enhance security and prevent accidents during Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations. The ban is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence have also urged the public to refrain from using fireworks and sky lanterns, noting that such activities have previously led to numerous fire incidents and significant property damage.

They have heightened preparedness to respond swiftly to any accidents during the festive period.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change calls for public cooperation to ensure a safe and healthy environment during the New Year celebrations.

Citizens are encouraged to adhere to the regulations and consider the well-being of the community and the environment, it added.
