Social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and WhatsApp, were unblocked after two week.
The decision was taken after the state minister held a virtual meeting with representatives of Meta Asia from Singapore and Tiktok.
According to Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB), all social media platforms have been unblocked after 2pm on Wednesday.
It may take 24 to 48 hours to resume full-fledged services, it said.
The social media platforms were unblocked hours after State Minister for Post, Telecommunication, and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak disclosed the decision following a meeting with officials of the social media platforms at BTRC Bhaban.
TikTok officials physically joined the meeting at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Bhaban this morning while officials of Meta’s platforms took part in the event virtually from Singapore.
After the meeting, Palak said the social media flatforms have assured to cooperate the government as per their community standards and country law’s.
During the meeting, he shared government’s concern regarding spreading of misinformation that provoked violence amid the student protest.
Palak in the press conference said, the government presented specific cases where provocative Facebook posts full of misinformation like death of over 900 people during the protests that those were clearly violating their own community standards.
TikTok response of taking down inappropriate content are over 60 percent, followed by YouTube which less than 25 percent and Facebook which is not even 15 percent.
The minister on Tuesday at an emergency cyber security meeting at the ICT Tower in Agargaon also said hackers made over 50,000 cyber attacks on websites of eight government institutions, including Bangladesh Bank, power and energy over the ten days.
