The government has shut down five fertiliser factories to increase supply of natural gas to power plants, said official sources concerned.
The bulk of the electricity generated from diverted gas will be supplied to households and industries, they added.
The decision to shut fertiliser factories except the recently launched Ghorasal-Polash Urea Fertiliser Factory was taken last Wednesday at an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid.
“We have decided to divert the gas from fertiliser factories to power plants, industrial units and households,” said an official.
Bangladesh’s six fertiliser factories consume a total of 329 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas.
The consumption has now reduced to only 89.5 mmcfd as the gas is being diverted to power plants to boost electricity generation, the official said.
