The Japanese funded 1200-megawatts (MW) Matarbari Coal-fired Power Plant is supplying its maximum electricity to grid after resuming Unit-2 of the plant last Monday after maintenance, official confirmed.
“Unit-1 of the plant resumed power production on August 17, 2024 and then started power generation from Unit-2 last Monday,” Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) member generation Engr. Kh. Mokammel Hossain told the daily sun on Thursday.
He added the two units of the plant has shut down on August 10, 2024 due to technical glitch. The sudden shut of the plant down pushed the load shedding of electricity over a week before operation of the plant, official sources said. Now, the units produce around 1000MW.
The state-owned Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Ltd (CPGCB) implements the project at a cost of Tk 518.84 billion including Matarbari deep sea port.
The Unit-1 of the plant started commercial operation on December 26, 2023 while another unit yet to come into commercial operation.
Bangladesh has signed a loan deal with JICA for setting up the plant with deep seaport on June 16, 2014.
