The interim government has suspended all negotiations, project selections, and purchasing processes of power and energy projects under the ‘controversial’ Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provision) Act 2010.
Newly appointed Power, Energy, Rail, Road Transport, and Bridges adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan made the decision after a meeting with top officials at the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources in the Secretariat on Sunday.
All activities under the already endorsed agreements under the special law in the power and energy sector will, however, be continued, he said on his first day in office after swearing in as the adviser of the new interim government headed by Nobel Laureate professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.
The interim government, however, review the terms and conditions of the agreement already signed under the law, according to him.
On Sunday, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has suggested on abolishing the controversial acts as part of reforming power and energy sectors.
Under the acts, series of renewable power and energy projects so far placed before the cabinet committee on public purchase during the then Awami League government.
Besides, the adviser also endorsed decision to suspend power and natural gas tariff hike under government’s executive order.
The independent body- Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) will adjust the tariff under the commission hearing, according to him.
