Rejoinder: JERA Meghnaghat Power Limited

JMPL’s tariff, as determined under the merit order of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), is approximately Tk 6 per kWh, inclusive of capacity payments, Yasunori Katsumata, Chief Executive Officer of JERA Meghnaghat Power Limited in a rejoinder to the Just Energy News said.

The plant’s dispatch is primarily driven by gas availability and demand as directed by the National Load Dispatch Centre (NLDC) and BPDB, he added.

When operating at higher load factors, the cost of electricity generation from JMPL remains approximately Tk 6 per kWh. However, contrary to statements made in the article, JMPL has not received any capacity payments, it said.

Gas supply constraints remain the principal factor affecting operations, the rejoinder claimed.   According to daily reports from Petrobangla, demand from the power sector is around 2,500 mmscfd, compared with an actual supply of roughly 900 mmscfd, it added.

Within the franchise area of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC—where the JMPL project is located—gas demand is approximately 996 mmscfd, against a supply of around 231 mmscfd, it also said. This significant shortfall has resulted in outages at several power plants capable of supplying low-cost electricity to the national grid, including JMPL, it added.
