RMG-only port rent relief draws flak from DCCI

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) has expressed concern over a recent government decision to exempt ready-made garment (RMG) importers from a significant increase in store rent charges at Chittagong Port, warning that such selective benefits could create disparities among different industrial sectors.

In a circular issued by the Ministry of Shipping on June 2, 2025, RMG importers were granted exemption from the four-fold increase in port store rent that typically applies after the expiration of the standard storage period. The exemption, however, does not extend to importers from other sectors.

In a statement on Wednesday, DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed said the preferential treatment for one industry risks creating an unbalanced business environment in Bangladesh. “Granting special privileges to only one sector will lead to discrimination against other industries and hinder fair competition,” Ahmed said.

He pointed out that the majority of importers, regardless of sector, rely on Chittagong Port and face similar challenges, including traffic congestion, inadequate port infrastructure, and delays in cargo handling.

“Without improving the overall logistics and supply chain management at the port, increasing store rent will only escalate the cost of doing business across industries,” Ahmed added.

The DCCI president emphasized that the country could fall behind in regional competitiveness due to rising logistical costs if such issues remain unaddressed.

He also urged authorities to ensure that all ports across Bangladesh continue smooth export-import operations during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holiday and other national festivals.

Ahmed further appealed to the government to reconsider the recent exemption policy and implement fairer measures that do not burden non-RMG importers with added costs caused by systemic delays beyond their control.
