Bangladesh has called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to expand opportunities for fellowships, internships, training and professional development for the country’s young scientists, researchers, students and professionals.
The call was made by Md Anwar Hossain, Secretary of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Science and Technology, during a bilateral meeting in Vienna on Friday with Hua Liu, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation.
The meeting focused on expanding IAEA fellowships, internships and professional development opportunities for Bangladeshi nuclear scientists, professionals and government officials.
Mr Hossain particularly sought greater opportunities for Bangladeshi government officials to undertake internships at the IAEA, participate in international training programmes and pursue employment opportunities in various positions within the organisation.
He said strengthening cooperation with the IAEA to create international opportunities and develop the skills of young students, researchers and professionals in Bangladesh’s science and technology sector was a key priority for the country.
The meeting also placed emphasis on creating new opportunities for young researchers and scientists, promoting research and innovation, and strengthening knowledge and technical capacity through international cooperation.
The two sides further discussed expanding opportunities for students, scientists and researchers to pursue international education and training, fellowships and joint research programmes.
The meeting also covered ways to strengthen mutual cooperation between Bangladesh and the IAEA and enhance Bangladesh’s capacity for the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology through human-resource development.
Those attending the bilateral meeting included Bangladesh’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN organisations in Vienna, Toufiq Hasan; Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr M Moynul Islam; Joint Secretary Sheikh Mohammad Touhidul Islam; and Dr Md Kabir Hossain, Project Director of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant construction project.
