Rosatom has launched the control assembly of its 250th nuclear reactor at the Atommash plant, marking a historic milestone in the Russian nuclear industry’s 80th anniversary year. The VVER-1200 reactor vessel now under assembly is designated for Unit 4 of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Türkiye.
Atommash, part of Rosatom’s Mechanical Engineering Division, plays a central role in manufacturing the massive reactor components. This latest reactor, referred to by Rosatom as a “jubilee unit,” represents decades of nuclear expertise and international cooperation.
“Our products have powered hundreds of nuclear facilities in Russia and worldwide, delivering warmth and light to millions,” said Igor Kotov, Head of Rosatom’s Mechanical Engineering Division. “They’ve also enabled the development of nuclear icebreakers exploring the Russian Arctic. And we’re just getting started—with future projects like the world’s first Generation IV energy complex in Seversk and a new fleet of floating nuclear power plants.”
The VVER-1200 reactor is a flagship model of Russian nuclear technology, known for its enhanced safety features and long operational life. During control assembly, engineers meticulously verify the alignment of all internal components with tolerances down to a thousandth of a millimeter—ensuring decades of reliable service and simplifying on-site installation.
“The control assembly is like a nuclear nesting doll. Every piece must fit perfectly to ensure safety and performance,” explained Maxim Zhidkov, Director of Atommash. “This process confirms the reactor’s readiness to serve for at least 60 years and reflects the high standards of Russian engineering.”
Rosatom is Türkiye’s strategic partner in building its first nuclear power plant, a project that will eventually supply 10% of the country’s electricity.
“Russian nuclear industry companies are trusted suppliers to the Akkuyu project,” noted Sergei Butckikh, CEO of Akkuyu Nuclear. “Their commitment to technological excellence ensures the delivery of world-class equipment with a proven track record of performance.”
As Rosatom celebrates its industrial heritage, the assembly of its 250th reactor underscores the company’s continued global leadership in nuclear innovation and engineering.
