Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC (TGTDPLC) has postponed for the second consecutive month a public hearing in the Roopganj industrial belt, which was intended to address public concerns over the ongoing natural gas crisis.
The hearing, recommended by the Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner’s Office, has been deferred since July. The office has now requested that the meeting be held next month, subject to an improvement in gas supplies to the industrial area.
The public hearing was supposed to be held in the presence of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmood Tuku as part of an awareness campaign against illegal gas connections and the theft of natural gas.
Titas Gas managing director Shahnewaz Parvez disclosed the postponement at a coordination meeting chaired by Md Ziaul Huq, secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD), at the ministry today.
He said the Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner’s Office had requested that the pending hearing be arranged next month, provided gas supplies to the industrial belt improve.
Titas Gas last held a public hearing on December 30, 2025, during the tenure of the interim government.
Meanwhile, natural gas supply to the national grid has reached 2,381 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), including 765 mmcfd of imported gas, against projected demand of around 3,800 mmcfd.
During the meeting, EMRD officials expressed concern over Titas Gas’s system losses.
In response, the company’s managing director said Titas Gas had reduced its system loss by around two percentage points over the past month, from 9.96%.
The EMRD also instructed Titas Gas to intensify drives against illegal connections and meter tampering.
Officials said members of parliament from several constituencies had pressured Titas Gas to withdraw enforcement measures taken against meter tampering at their own industrial establishments.
