Bangladesh has projected the electricity tariff for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant at Tk 6.72 per kilowatt hour (kWh), although the final rate has yet to be determined pending detailed financial data from the plant authorities.
The projection was disclosed on Wednesday by Rezaul Karim, chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board, during a public hearing at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh auditorium in Dhaka.
“I have sent letters to the Rooppur power plant authorities asking them to provide the total project cost and operation and maintenance (O&M) expenses so that we can determine the per-unit electricity tariff. We have yet to receive the financial data,” Mr Karim said while explaining the proposal for a power tariff increase.
He added that the actual tariff for electricity generated by the Rooppur plant would be finalised only after the required financial information is received.
“We determined the disclosed tariff based on assumptions,” he said.
Earlier, Just Energy News reported that Bangladesh had delayed setting the tariff for the Rooppur plant because the cost of nuclear fuel — a key factor in pricing — had not yet been disclosed. The uncertainty has prevented the BPDB, the country’s sole bulk electricity purchaser, from finalising the per-unit cost of electricity from the project.
