Bangladesh has achieved a new milestone in electricity generation. A record 17,200 megawatts (MW) of electricity was generated at 9:00pm on Wednesday night, marking the highest power production in the country’s history.
The information was confirmed by sources at Power Grid Company of Bangladesh PLC. The previous record for highest electricity generation was 16,794 MW, achieved on July 23, 2025.
Officials in the power sector said electricity demand in the country reaches its peak during the evening hours. During the summer season in particular, increased use of cooling appliances in households significantly raises peak load demand.
A major share of the country’s electricity consumption comes from the residential sector, which accounts for around 50 to 55 percent of total usage. Electricity in households is mainly consumed through fans, lighting, air conditioners and other daily necessities.
The industrial sector also contributes substantially to electricity demand, accounting for around 30 to 35 percent of total consumption. Major consumers include the ready-made garments (RMG) industry, textile mills and heavy industries.
In the commercial sector, including markets, offices, hotels and restaurants, around 10 percent of electricity is consumed. The remaining portion is used for agriculture and irrigation, street lighting and other public services.
According to data from the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), the country’s total installed power generation capacity currently exceeds 29,000 MW.
However, actual power generation depends on fuel supply, maintenance of power plants and fluctuations in demand.
