The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has welcomed the move by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to strengthen monitoring of withholding tax, but cautioned against causing unnecessary harassment to compliant businesses.
In a statement issued on Monday, the chamber said effective implementation of monitoring, collection and verification of taxes deducted at source under the Income Tax Act, 2023 would help boost revenue mobilisation and widen the tax net.
However, DCCI stressed that businesses already complying with tax rules should not face undue scrutiny or administrative hassles during the enforcement process.
It also urged authorities to allow adequate time and flexibility for firms that have yet to fully ensure compliance, so that they can adjust to the new requirements.
The chamber underscored the need for greater use of automation and digital technologies in revenue management to achieve collection targets while reducing unnecessary suffering for private sector entrepreneurs.
DCCI said a balance between higher revenue collection and a business-friendly environment is achievable, but requires continued constructive dialogue between the NBR and the private sector.
It also called for joint efforts by the government and businesses to improve discipline in the tax system and ensure smoother compliance across all sectors.
