ADP spending hits 6-yr lowest in Jul-Jan

The implementation of the Annual Development Programme (ADP) has hit its lowest point in six years, with only 21.52 percent of the budget utilised between July and January of FY25.

During this period, Tk59,877 crore was spent from the development budget, which is is Tk 14,588 crore lower than Tk74,464 crore spent during the same period last year, according to the latest report from the Implementation, Monitoring, and Evaluation Division (IMED) unveiled on Thursday.

This indicates that even the amount spent on projects last year could not be matched during the first seven months of the ongoing 2024-25 fiscal year, marking the lowest expenditure in six years.

Several factors, including the political movements in July-August, a change in government, and difficulties in locating contractors and project directors, have impacted development activities, IMED officials said.

With just five months remaining in the current fiscal year, the government still needs to spend Tk 2,18,412 crore to meet the target. The total development expenditure for the year was set at Tk 2,78,289 crore.IMED data also shows that in the COVID-affected fiscal year 2020-21, Tk61,000 crore was spent during the July-January period. In the following two years, spending rose to around Tk 72,000 crore. Specifically, Tk71,532 crore was spent in 2021-22, while Tk61,048 crore was utilised in 2020-21.
