Bangladesh and Germany deepen green skills partnership with new renewable energy training deal

Bangladesh and Germany have strengthened their long-standing development partnership by signing a new agreement aimed at expanding vocational training for the renewable energy sector, as both countries seek to address growing demand for green skills and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

The Implementation Agreement, signed between Bangladesh’s Technical and Madrasah Education Division (TMED) under the Ministry of Education and GIZ Bangladesh, acting on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), launches the next phase of the Vocational Training in the Field of Renewable Energy (TVET4RE) programme.

The agreement follows Germany’s commitment of €21.77 million in January 2026 to support sustainable development projects in Bangladesh and moves the initiative from planning into implementation after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Bangladesh’s Economic Relations Division in June.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Dhaka, Md. Daud Miah, Secretary of the Technical and Madrasah Education Division, said the agreement reflected the enduring relationship between the two countries.

“Today’s signing represents more than the formalisation of a project. It reflects the longstanding friendship and strong development partnership between the Governments of Bangladesh and Germany,” he said, adding that Germany has played a significant role in strengthening Bangladesh’s technical and vocational education sector.

The TVET4RE project is designed to equip young people with practical skills required for employment in the rapidly expanding renewable energy industry. Officials said the programme supports Bangladesh’s TVET Implementation Plan 2025–2030, helping develop a workforce capable of supporting the country’s clean energy ambitions.

The initiative also complements the Professional Education in Industrial and Environmental Safety (PRECISE) project, with both programmes intended to improve workforce readiness, strengthen industrial safety and support sustainable economic growth.

Among those attending the ceremony were Abul Khayer Md. Akkas Ali, Director General of the Directorate of Technical Education; Shamshur Rahman Khan, Additional Secretary (Development), TMED; Engr. Md. Ruhul Amin, Chairman of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board; and Jannis Hussain, Deputy Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy in Bangladesh.

The event concluded with discussions between representatives of Bangladesh’s technical education institutions and development partners on the implementation of the programme and future cooperation in green skills development.
