Bangladesh has discussed expanding cooperation with the United States on advanced nuclear technology, including small modular reactors (SMRs), as Dhaka seeks new ways to strengthen energy security and meet rising demand.
Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam held talks with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright in Washington on Wednesday, with the two sides focusing on the peaceful use of nuclear technology, energy security, technology transfer and knowledge exchange.
Anam said modern, safe nuclear technology could have an important role in meeting Bangladesh’s growing energy needs while supporting sustainable development. He said Dhaka was giving serious consideration to advanced nuclear technologies, particularly SMRs.
The minister reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to the peaceful, safe, secure and responsible use of nuclear technology. He also stressed the importance of sharing expertise, experience and technology with countries such as the US to support Bangladesh’s economic development and energy security.
Wright expressed a positive view of closer cooperation with Bangladesh in the energy and nuclear technology sectors. He highlighted Washington’s focus on developing and deploying advanced nuclear technologies, including SMRs.
The US Department of Energy is placing particular emphasis on accelerating next-generation nuclear technologies, the meeting was told.
The discussions also covered potential US support for Bangladesh’s energy sector, bilateral cooperation and opportunities to deepen technical and scientific exchanges.
Both sides expressed an interest in strengthening existing ties and working together on nuclear science, technology and wider energy-sector issues.
Bangladesh has been seeking greater cooperation with international partners as it looks to improve energy security and accelerate development through advanced technologies. In recent months, Dhaka has stepped up discussions with international partners over the potential peaceful use of advanced nuclear technologies.
The talks come as Bangladesh continues to develop its nuclear-energy programme and explores technologies that could complement existing efforts to expand and secure the country’s electricity supply.
