Bangladesh has secured an additional €2 million in grant assistance from Germany to promote peaceful coexistence between local communities and forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals (FDMNs) in Cox’s Bazar.
The additional funding brings Germany’s total grant commitment to the project, titled Socio-Economic Support for Host and FDMN Communities in Cox’s Bazar (SHADE), to €7 million.
The Economic Relations Division (ERD) of the Ministry of Finance and the German government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Dhaka on Sunday to provide the additional assistance.
ERD Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while Mark Gombert, country director of GIZ Bangladesh, represented the German side.
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief is implementing the project, which aims to strengthen peaceful coexistence between host communities and displaced Myanmar nationals in Cox’s Bazar.
The latest €2 million grant is equivalent to around Tk27.74 crore, according to an ERD press release.
Germany had previously provided €5 million in grant assistance for the project under the original agreement.
Germany has been a development partner of Bangladesh since 1972, with its total committed financial and technical assistance reaching approximately €4 billion.
Currently, 21 projects are being implemented in Bangladesh through the German development agency GIZ, backed by grant assistance totalling €121.62 million, the ERD said.
