China has been implementing a series of coal-fired power plants in its territory and across the globe despite concern for environment.
“We’ve a plan to implement another 1000 megawatt of coal-fired power plant soon,” China Datang Overseas Electric Technology and O&M Co Ltd Vice-pesident Ding Young told a group of Bangladeshi journalists visiting its ultra super critical Datang Qingyuan Co-generation power plant having a capacity to generate 600MW of electricity at ShiJingShan district near the Chinese capital, Beijing.
The China Datang Overseas Electric Technology boss, which is also responsible for operating and maintaining the under-construction 1320MW Bangladesh-China friendship coal-fired plant in Payra, said they have concentrated more on reducing environmental hazard in China and outside the country.
“We’ve been able to get success on low hazard coal-fired power plant here after taking technology from the USA in 1980. Now China has its own technology to implement least environmental hazard coal-fired power plant,” he added.
I hope Payra coal-fired plant will also be implemented following ultra super technology, he said, adding that the plant will be environmental hazard-free in Bangladesh, he said.
The Bangladesh government is expected to start the commissioning of the first unit of Payra power plant by April, 2019, the North West Power Generation Company Ltd managing director said.
Responding to present carbon discharge rate in Beijing and across China, another official said they have no plant to shut their existing coal-fired plants.
The government has a plan to expand electricity generation through fuel mixture, he added.
“We’ve just shut an old age coal-fired plant,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
China’s major electricity generation comes from coal-fired power plants.
Bangladesh has also a plan to generate at least 45 percent of electricity from coal-fired plants.
During the visit, the Chinese power plant officials could not to confirm the actual generation of electricity from coal-fired power plants in China.
But, they are happy and confident about their technological progress in power generation.
