Environment, Forests and Climate Change adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, has announced the endorsement of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines to address the challenge of plastic pollution.
She emphasized that producers must take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products. These guidelines will enhance opportunities for the reuse, recycling, and safe management of plastic waste.
She made these remarks during a meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday as discussions were held on the formulation of EPR guidelines to control plastic pollution.
Rizwana Hasan stated that effective solutions to plastic pollution can only be achieved through the collective efforts of all stakeholders, paving the way for environmentally sustainable development in Bangladesh.
She highlighted the need to educate the public about the harmful effects of polythene and microplastics, urging a change in people’s mindset. She emphasized that it is only through collective action that the plastic issue can be controlled.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, additional secretaries, relevant officials, and representatives from non-governmental organizations.
