The government of Japan will provide approximately US$3.24 million or Tk 38.63 crore grants for a flagship primary education programme of the Bangladesh government.
In this regard, a grant agreement was signed between the two governments at a function at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) on Thursday, according to a release.
Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, ERD secretary signed the grant agreement and exchange of notes on behalf of the Bangladesh government Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh IWAMA Kiminori signed the exchange of notes and ICHIGUCHI Tomohide, chief representative, JICA Bangladesh Office, signed the grant agreement on behalf of the government of Japan.
‘The Fourth Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP-4)’ is being implemented during the period July 2018 to June 2025 by the Directorate of Primary Education under Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
The government of Japan has already provided total JPY2,000 million grant in last four years for the Programme.
The new grants will be utilised for fiduciary system and budget, teacher education and continuous professional development.
Japan is the single largest bilateral development partner of Bangladesh. Since independence, Japan has committed $32.61 billion. Japan has contributed significantly to the overall development of the country.
In addition to soft loans, Japan is also providing significant amounts of grant and technical assistance for different projects, including support to human resource development, socio-economic development and environment protection.
