Maj General (Retd) Dr Monirul Islam Akhand, has officially assumed the position of Managing Director of Summit Power Limited (SPL) effective today (January 1, 2025.)
Dr Akhand brings a distinguished career spanning over three decades in the Bangladesh Army, where he held key command, staff, and instructional roles, including Director of Overseas Operations, DG Intelligence, and College Secretary at the National Defence College (NDC). He also served in two United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in Yugoslavia and Liberia and worked with the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) in Florida for over two years.
In addition to his military career, Dr Akhand has contributed to academia as an adjunct faculty member at North South University and BRAC University. He holds a PhD from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), an MSc in Security and Development Studies from Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), and an MBA from the University of South Florida, among other academic achievements.
Dr Akhand is a recipient of several accolades, including the prestigious āSword of Honourā from the Bangladesh Military Academy and the Joint Service Commendation Medal from the United States Armed Forces. He is fluent in Bangla, English, and Turkish and has traveled to 62 countries.
He succeeds Engr Md Mozammel Hossain, who served as Managing Director of SPL and now assumes the role of Advisor to the company. Engr Hossain joined Summit Group in 2011 after retiring from the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd (PGCB) and has been recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions to Bangladeshās power sector.
