September exports rise 8.54pc to $3.94b

Bangladesh’s merchandise exports grew by 8.54 percent year-on-year to $3.94 billion in September, marking the second consecutive month of positive export growth.

The steady upward trend was driven primarily by a solid recovery in the ready-made garment sector, alongside notable double-digit surges across several major non-RMG categories.

According to data released by the Export Promotion Bureau, cumulative export earnings for the first three months of the current fiscal year reached $3.09 billion, reflecting a 6.34 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

However, September earnings dipped 11.11 percent on a month-on-month basis due to standard trade fluctuations.

The garment sector, which serves as the backbone of the country’s export economy, expanded by 8.56 percent year-on-year to reach $3.08 billion during the month.

Meanwhile, non-RMG sectors recorded impressive performances, led by the pharmaceutical industry, which experienced the strongest sector-wide growth with a remarkable 64.33 percent surge.

Traditional and emerging manufacturing segments also contributed significantly to the monthly gain. Jute and jute goods shipments rose by 22.72 percent, while leather and leather products recorded a 20.19 percent increase. Additionally, home textile exports grew by 13.52 percent, and light engineering products maintained steady momentum with a 3.76 percent rise, highlighting the growing resilience and diversification of Bangladesh’s export portfolio in global markets.
