In a powerful statement at the launch of UNEP’s Emissions Gap Report 2024, Executive Director Inger Andersen highlighted the dire consequences of climate inaction, stating that current national climate commitments could lead to a catastrophic global temperature rise of 2.6-2.8Ā°C this century.
With devastating climate impacts already evident across the globe, Andersen stressed the urgent need for nations to submit ambitious new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) early next year.
Andersen warned that without a significant increase in ambition and rapid implementation of these pledges, the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5Ā°C could soon be unattainable.
The report emphasizes that to stay on track, emissions must be cut by 42% by 2030 and 57% by 2035, requiring a substantial annual reduction of 7.5%.
Calling for global mobilization, Andersen urged G20 nationsāresponsible for the majority of emissionsāto lead the charge in transitioning to renewable energy, reforming key sectors, and establishing a robust financial framework for climate action.
She underscored that every fraction of a degree in temperature rise matters, not just for the planet but for the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable populations worldwide.
As COP29 approaches, Andersen implored countries to prioritize climate action, aiming for stronger commitments that target the crucial 1.5Ā°C goal and ensure the necessary emissions reductions are achieved. āNo more hot air,ā she declared, emphasizing the time for decisive action is now.
