Environment, Forest and Climate Change adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, emphasised that protecting fishing cats is not only an issue of animal rights but also a vital step in preserving the environment.
‘Every species plays a role in nature, and it is our responsibility to ensure their survival,’ she stated.
As the chief guest at an event organised by the Forest Department for World Fishing Cat Day 2025, she condemned the killing of fishing cats due to conflicts with poultry farmers, warning that such actions could drive the species to extinction.
She called for greater public awareness and stricter enforcement of conservation laws.
The adviser also highlighted ongoing awareness campaigns led by Deputy Commissioners across the country and stressed the need for greater involvement from law enforcement and wildlife conservationists.
She urged the media to not only report on the threats to fishing cats but also educate the public on their ecological importance.
In addition, she called for wildlife conservation programs in educational institutions and stronger legal measures to hold offenders accountable.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr. Farhina Ahmed, attended the event as a special guest, while Chief Conservator of Forests Md. Amir Hosain Chowdhury, presided over the session. Other speakers included Dr. Mohammad Ali Reza Khan, wildlife expert and former Principal Wildlife Specialist at Dubai Safari Park; Mukit Majumder Babu, Chairman of the Nature & Life Foundation; and Dr. M. Monirul H. Khan, Professor of Zoology at Jahangirnagar University, who presented the keynote paper.
