Automated control systems installed at both units of Rooppur nuclear plant

Automated process control systems have been installed at both units of Bangladesh’s Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), marking a milestone in the development of the Russian-built facility.

The systems, supplied by Rosatom Automated Control Systems (RASU), comprise around 20,000 pieces of equipment across 43 systems. They are designed to monitor more than 7,000 process parameters, including reactor stability, to support safe and efficient plant operations.

Rooppur has also become the first Rosatom project to implement an Operator Information Support System (OISS), a digital tool developed by RASU using a digital twin of the power unit.

The OISS has already been integrated into Unit 1 and is being used during start-up operations. A similar system is planned for Unit 2.

The technology analyses data from 360 process systems, identifies deviations and provides operators with recommendations based on more than 80 sets of instructions, including emergency response procedures. It is designed to simplify complex operational data and help control room staff make informed decisions.

Alexey Likhachev, director general of Rosatom, described the Rooppur project as a flagship for the use of modern automation and control technologies.

He said it was the Russian state nuclear corporation’s first overseas plant to introduce the OISS, adding that the technology could improve response times, reduce operating costs and provide control room personnel with additional decision-making support.

The Rooppur plant, being built by Atomstroyexport, Rosatom’s engineering division, will feature two Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors.

The project represents a major element of nuclear energy cooperation between Bangladesh and Russia, as Bangladesh seeks to diversify its energy mix and expand electricity generation capacity.
