Bangladesh and Türkiye seek stronger trade ties amid investment push

Business leaders from Bangladesh and Türkiye have pledged to deepen commercial cooperation following a bilateral trade meeting held in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The discussion took place between office bearers of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and a seven-member Turkish business delegation led by Burak Basegmezlar, Vice President of the Turkish Electro Technology Exporters’ Association (TET). Türkiye’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ramis Şen, also attended the event at the Gulshan Centre.

Welcoming the delegation, DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed said Bangladesh and Türkiye had long enjoyed cordial relations and expressed optimism that increased engagement between private sector representatives would help expand bilateral trade.

According to DCCI figures, two-way trade between the countries reached approximately $1.05bn during the 2024–25 fiscal year. Bangladesh exported goods worth $634.53m to Türkiye, while imports from the country stood at $416.76m.

Ahmed said Turkish businesses had already invested more than $74m in Bangladesh across several sectors. He invited further Turkish investment, including joint ventures, in industries such as ready-made garments, leather and footwear, jute products, agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, light engineering, information technology services, home textiles and consumer goods.

Basegmezlar said demand for electronic equipment, household appliances and generators was growing in Bangladesh, adding that Turkish companies were interested in both joint and independent investment opportunities in these sectors.

He also announced plans for a larger delegation of Turkish entrepreneurs from the electronics and electrical equipment industries to visit Bangladesh in November. The proposed visit is expected to include business-to-business meetings aimed at identifying new trade and investment opportunities.

Ambassador Ramis Şen said there was “immense potential” to strengthen bilateral trade but noted that closer business-to-business cooperation would be essential to unlock future growth.

He added that the DCCI could play an important role in strengthening commercial links between the private sectors of the two countries.

DCCI Senior Vice President Razeev H Chowdhury and Vice President Md Salem Sulaiman were among those present at the meeting.
