Chevron Bangladesh, in collaboration with environmental organization Green Savers, has launched a major tree plantation initiative near the Bibiyana Gas Plant in Habiganj district.
The project is part of a nationwide effort to safeguard biodiversity and combat environmental degradation, reflecting Chevron’s commitment to sustainable practices.
Over the next five years, Chevron plans to plant more than 4,000 high-quality seedlings, focusing on indigenous varieties. These will include fruit trees, medicinal plants, and wood species, aimed at enhancing local biodiversity, improving air quality, and creating new habitats for wildlife.
Among the species to be planted are Debdaru trees, which are known for their ability to reduce noise pollution, contributing to a more serene environment in the area.
Green Savers, a key partner in the project, will oversee the care and maintenance of the trees to ensure the initiative’s long-term success.
The organization has a strong track record of environmental conservation and is dedicated to preserving the nation’s natural resources.
Speaking at the launch event, Fardoush Anwar, Director of the Sylhet Divisional Office of the Department of Environment, praised Chevron’s environmental responsibility.
He noted that the company’s actions reflect a genuine commitment to promoting sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.
Chevron Bangladesh’s President and Managing Director, Eric M. Walker, highlighted the company’s focus on offsetting carbon emissions through the tree plantation program. He reaffirmed Chevron’s dedication to environmental protection and emphasized the importance of community welfare in their business operations.
Ahsan Rony, Founder of Green Savers, also lauded Chevron’s leadership in the drive to create a greener Bangladesh. He encouraged other corporations to adopt similar initiatives, stressing the critical role that private sector engagement plays in achieving environmental sustainability.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by local government officials, law enforcement, community leaders, and other prominent figures. All expressed strong support for the initiative, which aims to foster a positive balance between industrial growth and nature conservation.
