The government is planning to make downward adjustments of fuel prices considering the
international market, State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid.
“We have a plan to cut the fuel prices this month considering the trend of the international
market,” he said at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka on Sunday.
He informed that a proposal has already been placed in this regard before the Prime Minister to
introduce an automated monthly fuel pricing.
According to the minister, the power tariff will be adjusted in the first week of each month.
“The regulatory bodies should play proactive rules to get the fruits of downward adjustment.
Even after upward adjustments, they should also play a role in monitoring the activities,” Nasrul
Hamid said.
“For example, when we make an upward adjustment of 5 percent (in price), the retrospective
effect in transportation cost and other sectors are around 15-20 percent,” he said, expressing
his disappointments.
The minister added that the government will go for a regular pricing adjustment formula in the
coming days considering what the neighbouring countries are doing in this matter.
He said the diesel tariff is set at Tk 133 in West Bengal of India whereas this is Tk 109 in
Bangladesh.
