The government has raised the natural gas tariff for feeding power plants and captive electricity generation by Tk 0.75 per cubic meter to Tk 14.75 and Tk 30.75 respectively.
The new adjustment will come into effective in the current month, said a gazette on Tuesday in this regard.
According to the gazette, the power generation cost will be increased to Tk 14.75 now from Tk 14 per cubic meter while the captive power generation cost to raise Tk 30.75 per cubic meter.
The gas tariff will be increased by 2.5 percent.
The power generation and captive electricity will pay additional Tk 86.25 crore per month after new adjustment, officials said. The additional revenue will be come down subsidy some extent and help to purchase LNG, the energy and mineral resource division official said.
Now, the electricity generation and captive power consume around 60 percent of the total piped gas supply in the grid.
Despite the adjustment, the government will require Tk 6000 crore subsidy for energy sector after the adjustment, said state miniater for power and energy Nasrul Hamid told at a press conference.
He added the government will require additional Tk 43,000 crore to provide low cost power. “We have plan to adjust the power tariff minimum Tk 0.34 per unit and maximum Tk 0.70 per unit to minimize subsidy some extent,” he said.
The adjustment will help to reach break-even point some extent, according to him.
The government will adjust retail power tariff to Tk 8.95 per unit from Tk 8.25 per unit.
Besides, the wholesales power tariff will be increased to Tk 7.04 from Tk 6.70 per unit next month.
