CPGCBL, PT Pertamina sign to establish 500MW renewable plant

Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) and PT Pertamina Power Indonesia (PPI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up 500 MW grid- connected solar PV project at Moheshkhali area in Cox’s Bazar. 

The MoU, which is subject to the results of a Feasibility Study, also includes the

establishment of supporting facilities and lays the groundwork for additional cooperative ventures based on mutually agreed terms and conditions. This MoU signing is the follow up of G2G MoU Signed between Indonesia and Bangladesh on 2017, official said.

Managing Director of CPGCBL Abul Kalam Azad and, Acting Chief Executive Officer of PPI Fadli Rahman signed the MoU on behalf of their organisations held at the local hotel.

State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid, Power Division Senior Secretary Habibur Rahman, Indonesian Ambassador to Dhaka Heru Hartanto Subolo and senior official concern attended at the signing function.  

State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid said the government is expected to receive USD$500 million investment for implementation of the largest solar based power plant.

He added his government aims to produce over 12000MW of electricity from the renewable energy by 2030.

Power Division Senior Secretary Habibur Rahman said the project will be implemented shortest possible time as the land is ready so far.

He is hopeful that the 500MW project would be expanded to 5000MW.

The Power Secretary also informed the government is now importing 3-3.5million metric tonnes of coal to feed power plants from Indonesia.    

Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL), an enterprise of the Government of the of Bangladesh, was established as a public limited company under the Companies Act 1994 on Sth September 2011.

The flagship initiative of CPGCBL is the construction of a 2×600 MW Ultra Super Critical (USC Coal-Fired Power Plant at Matarbari ni Cox’s Bazar.

Additionally, CPGCBL has planned to develop the 500-600 MW LNG based CCPP, Matarbari 2×600 MW USC CFPP (Phase II) Project, a 50 MW Grid-Tied Solar Power Project, a Wind Power Project, and a Transshipment Terminal (TT) Project. CPGCBL has also entered into an MOU in 2023 with Sembcorp Utilities PTE Ltd. for the development of 400 MW Renewable Energy Generation Project at Matarbari area.

PT Pertamina Power Indonesia (PPI) is a leading energy company focused on developing clean energy. Today it operates more than 2.7 Gigawatt power plant portfolio which includes gas to power,

solar PV, geothermal, and biogas.
