LPG price surge driven by VAT changes: BERC

In a recent development, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has increased the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for consumers by 4 Taka per 12 kg cylinder.

This price hike is a direct result of adjustments to the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Supplementary Duty (Amendment) Ordinance of 2025, along with the accompanying notifications and decrees.

These changes have affected the tax rates applied to LPG.

In accordance with the newly implemented VAT rate, which impacts LPG, BERC has set the revised price for January 2025.

The increase in the cost of LPG follows the change in VAT rates, marking a significant shift in the pricing structure for this essential energy source.

The new price will come into effect starting Tuesday evening, January 14, 2025.

This change is expected to influence the cost for consumers who rely on LPG for cooking and other domestic uses.

The increase has sparked concerns about the growing costs of household essentials, with many questioning the impact of such price hikes on the broader economy.
